Electricity is an essential element in our daily lives, and at times it is simple to overlook exactly how hazardous it can be. In the correct situation, it can actually kill a person. It can painfully shock you, damage susceptible equipment, and catch fire to flammable materials.
This article covers some fundamental safety rules you need to follow for electrical safety.
Do not touch any outlet or switch if any part of your body is in water. Do not use any electrical appliance around any kind of water.
The following can cause an electrical accident so they should be avoided.
- Utilizing a 3-wire cord with only a 2-wire plug.
- Excess number of appliances plugged into an outlet.
- Using the attached electrical cord to raise or lower equipment.
- The power is still on when you are making a repair.
- There are loose wires or connections in your outlet or plugs connections
- There may be faulty insulation
- Improper or no grounding (removing the 3rd prong on a plug
- Use of "gerrymandered" extension cords
- Improper parts or parts that are defective
Use extraordinary precaution when working with potentially harmful situations and environments. An unintended static discharge may cause an explosion or fire in places where any of the following are present:
- Flammable liquids, vapors and gasses
- Flammable dust
- Caustic spaces
- Unstable environments
- Cluttered rooms with electrical boxes that are blocked or flammable supplies and poor ventilation.
Special care is also needed in damp or wet locations - water and electricity are an awful mix. If there is frayed or damaged wire, a fatal electrical shock can be the result.
Take these safety precautions around your home and you and your family will be much safer.
