Medical experts are finding that individuals who are age sixty five or older are less likely to become infected with the 2009 H1N1 swine flu and they believe the reason for this may be that they their immune systems have built up a natural resistance to this virus. However, if an individual who is sixty five years of age or older does become infected with the H1N1 virus, they are at a higher risk for developing serious complications that can be life threatening due to their illness. This is primarily due to the fact that our immune systems defenses tend to become weaker as we age. Therefore, anyone in this age group should take the necessary precautions in order to avoid becoming infected from the H1N1 virus.
Prevention of H1N1 in Individuals who are Over 65
While the likelihood of infection from the 2009 H1N1 swine flu in individuals sixty five and older is less than in younger individuals, the "CDC" or "center for disease control" strongly recommends that these individuals receive the 2009 H1N1 flu vaccination as it is the best method of protection against contracting this virus. There are other precautions that should be taken as well even after receiving this vaccination that will aid in preventing becoming infected. These methods include frequent hand washing with warm soap and water or using anti-bacterial hand wipes or sanitizers when soap and water is unavailable.
Other methods of prevention include covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing with a tissue and disposing of it in a trash can immediately after use. You should also avoid other individuals who are sick. If you are age sixty five or older and you do experience any flu-like symptoms including sore throat, cough, fever, stuffy or runny nose, chill, headache, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, or other respiratory problems, you should contact your primary care physician right away for advice. According to the "CDC" individuals who are sixty five and older have priority when in comes to receiving antiviral medications.
Antiviral Medication for Those who are 65 and Older
Due to the fact that individuals who are sixty five years of age or older are very susceptible to serious complications and account for ninety percent of the deaths and sixty percent of the hospitalizations related to influenza, when becoming infected with H1N1 or any other seasonal flu they have priority in receiving antiviral medications. These antiviral drugs are prescription medications that not only treat the symptoms of the flu, but have the capability of stopping the reproduction of flu viruses in the body. These drugs are most effective when the virus is caught early so it is essential that you seek medical attention at the first signs of any serious flu-like symptoms.
