Let's imagine that you and I are in the same niche and have created very similar content on our respective web sites and we use the exact same keywords - so basically all things being equal except that you have 10 inbound links to your website and I have 100. Which web site do you feel is going to make it into the top ten results of a keyword search result?
My web site will, because I have more links to my site and therefore have a higher page-rank. Now if I discovered some other competitor online who again was in the very same niche, had very similar content, and used the same keywords but they had 1,000 inbound links, which site is going to make it into the top ten now? My competitor of course!
To find out how much competition you have and how many links you need to get to achieve the top ten results, you need to find out the page rank and the number of links to both your site and their site. On the whole you will likely have more inbound links if you have a higher pagerank.
To increase your pagerank you need to increase the number of inbound links to your website.
So how do you do this?
1) To get more inbound links to your site you need to use any ethical method you can to get another website to link into yours; here are several ways that you can do this:~
a) Use exchange links with other web sites, one site at a time;
b) Offer testimonials of other products and include a link to your website in your testimonial;
c) Write articles and post them to other websites;
d) Post your link in the various forums on-line.
