Education is the Key

Expert Author Garry P Pierrepont

We are all aware of the buzz phrase of the 90s - "education, education, education" - but when it comes to getting a job, how vital are qualifications? Firstly, if you have a sackful of qualifications, then make sure they are listed on your CV. There is no doubt that for some jobs, a good and impressive education will assist greatly in getting the job. However, for other jobs, some employers prefer the experience gained through working your way up the ladder.

You may not have a higher education; maybe you left school after 'O' levels or GCSEs and worked as an apprentice or joined the job force straight from school. The lack of a degree does not equate to a lack of intelligence or ability and the art of a good CV is to highlight this. What a degree shows is the ability to continue education on your own, after formal education has been completed.

However, this ability can be shown in other ways: for instance, if you began work at the bottom with a company and worked your way upwards to a more senior position, it shows that you have the capacity to succeed in a given environment. Maybe you left school and raised a family: this shows your determination to tackle new challenges and take on responsibility.

Today's job environment is extremely competitive, but the days of choosing a candidate because of the colour of his old university tie are gone. Employers want and need employees who can prove that they are capable, willing to work and learn and who can do the job advertised.

Do not assume that the lack of formal qualifications equates to limited career choices. Sometimes employers ask for them and sometimes they prefer experience and ability over qualifications.
