Many people experience a change in the appearance of the area around their eyes as they age. If you have noticed this, it is not too late to do something about it. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can fix the issue. However, like many types of plastic surgery, there are pros and cons when it comes to this kind.
This procedure mainly consists of removing some fat, skin, and muscle from around the eyes as needed. Whether you have bags below the eyes or puffy eyelids, you are probably sick of people assuming you are either older than you are or always tired. The condition could run in your family, or it could really be brought on by advancing age.
Either way, you do not have to suffer through life with it. Just remember that in most cases, insurance will not cover it since it is not medically necessary, unless you can prove that your vision is impeded.
The advantages of blepharoplasty are obvious. You can finally get rid of bags, puffiness, and the circles caused by such issues. You will likely appear years younger and healthier due to this simple operation.
Additionally, some people have vision problems due to puffiness or droopiness, and this procedure can help cure this issue, as well. It can typically be done on an outpatient basis, and you can usually be awake during it so there is no need to go under complete anesthesia.
There are some disadvantages, just like any other surgery. Firstly, it can cost a few thousand dollars, and the healing time varies depending on the person. There is always the risk of post-operative complications, ranging from infections, scarring, and general pain to blood clots, loss of sensitivity, and vision loss.
Your doctor should go over these risks with you, but you should also be aware of the potential for such issues before committing to the surgery.
Of course, doing some research on whether you are a good candidate can help improve the odds in your favor. Most patients that opt for blepharoplasty are age 35 or older and in good health. Additionally, you need to do research to make sure you are getting an experienced doctor who has performed this procedure before.
There are always risks when it comes to surgery, but you can certainly do your best to ensure that you come out of this procedure with nothing less than a younger appearance and your vision intact.
