Ebooks - How to Write, Publish and Sell Your First Ebook Online

Expert Author Michelle Kulp

The #1 place people go searching for information is on the Internet! E-books are an essential part of the marketing process when it comes to generating leads and making money online. They also help establish the author as an "expert" and gives them instant credibility. It may sound harsh, but when it comes to running an online business, it's either "Publish or Perish." So, let's publish...

Writing: The first question to ask yourself (and be honest here) is: Am I a skilled and talented writer? Can I write my own book? If your answer is "Yes" and you have that gift of writing, then it's simply a matter of sitting down and putting the words onto paper. (You should have at least 6-12 chapters and it should be between 30-80 pages). Now, if you are not a talented writer, it doesn't mean you can't get the same result, it simply means you are going to need to hire a ghostwriter who has the "writing skills and talent" that you lack. The best place to connect with talented ghostwriters is at a website called Elance. The great thing about Elance is you often find writers who specialize in your "topic" and for a fee, they will write the material on your behalf and turn over the copyright to you. Do not try to do the writing yourself if you don't have the skill, talent or inclination to do so as it will show and people will perceive you as an amateur.

Selling: To sell or not to sell? That is the question. Many online businesses use ebooks as a lead generation tool. There is a "give" and "take" that occurs on the internet. The owner of the website gives a free gift to the visitor on their website who signs up to receive email messages from them; this is called an "opt-in". Many times the website owners give away the book and then they have other products or services that the ebook naturally leads them to. So you will need to decide whether your want to give away your ebook or sell it. The perceived value is generally $10-47 dollars so you should take that into consideration. Of course, you can have one e-book on your website to give away, and then others that you sell. I encourage my clients to turn their e-books into E-courses which they can sell for a lot more.

Publishing: The best way to "publish" your E-book is to sell it from your own website. Now, if you don't have a website just yet, then you can work on getting your first website up and running in less than 30 days. A one stop shop for website design is your best bet as there are many components to having a successful website. It's not just about putting up a "pretty" website, it's about putting up a website that creates an income stream for you and builds a list to sell to. I also suggest having your ebook published on Amazon's Kindle.

People are looking for information to help make their lives easier, less stressful, more joyful and more prosperous. If you are an expert and you have information that can help others, then you can follow these 3 steps:

  1. Write the material (or have it ghostwritten);
  2. Publish your ebook on your own website and on Amazon's Kindle; and
  3. Sell (or give away) your ebook to others who need the information you have

It is a win/win for the purchaser of the E-book and for you! As Zig Ziglar once said, "You can have everything in life that you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want."
