I don't know about you but I've always been very keen about preserving our environment. I want to be a responsible citizen and I am being so not only by exercising my right to suffrage but also my right to a green workplace. I am doing this not because I am a tree-hugger (well, maybe I am but not too much) but because I am too concerned about global warming and how our current actions would affect the lives of the future generations. I want my kids to breathe clean air and experience the many wonders of our wildlife and forests-just as I have when I was a kid.
I've always felt that going green is very difficult. However, through continuous research and practice, I am able to say that it's not that hard. There are actually three things that we just need to cut down into if we want to help out our environment: papers, lights and electricity powered equipments.
You can find paper wherever you go. They are in restaurants as menus and as to-go boxes. They are in schools as transcript of records, assignments, notebooks, books, and more. They are in every office as official documents, contracts, memos, coffee cups and what else. Paper can also be found inside the household as carton boxes, toy boxes, receipts, menus, paper towels and a whole lot more. Paper is a recyclable and biodegradable resource but the sad fact is that about two-thirds of our landfills are composed of paper garbage. Perhaps people are not very aware of the fact that when paper is not properly recycled, it can stay into landfills and last for more than 5 decades.
So how do you cut down on paper? Simple. Print on both sides of the paper. If you have a lot of paper that has one side that is printed, then list down your shopping list on the other side. If you are in the office, tell your boss to use online fax instead. Traditional fax machines use a lot paper but online fax does not because fax messages are viewed on the computer.
You can also go green with your light bulbs. Turning them off when not in use is one effective way. Using light bulbs with lower voltage also helps. However, most people would complain that lower voltage means lesser light. That's not necessarily true. When purchasing light bulbs, choose that have Energy Star certified logos because this means that that particular bulb consumes 75% less energy than usual light bulbs but produces the same amount of light.
According to studies, a third of all carbon dioxide emissions come from electricity that people generate. This electricity is being used to power all sorts of things from your fax machines, to computers, PSPs, copiers, printers and more. If we can maximize our equipments, like using our computer as a fax machine (with online fax), then we can significantly reduce the electricity that we consumer and therefore, reduce the carbon dioxide that is being emitted in our atmosphere.
