The popularity of soy candles has been growing, as these candles burn cleaner than the paraffin candles and is natural. Although the cost of soy wax is more than the paraffin wax, but once people start making candles from soy wax they get addicted to it very easily and don't want to use any other kind of wax.
This wax is natural as it comes from soybeans. The oil that is removed from the flakes of soybean and is hydrogenated, Soybean is mostly grown in U.S. it is said that the candles made from the soy burn cleaner than the ones made from the paraffin wax, and this is said to be true to a certain extent. As we all know that all candles remove soot, and you can do nothing about it. But the candles made of soy remove white soot and paraffin candles remove black soot. Although in both the cases soot is not at all harmful to people, the only thing is that white soot is much cleaner than the black soot.
The only difference is the wax, in the making of soy and paraffin candles. Rest the equipment and the techniques used is the same. The soy wax is also meted by double boiling. Double boiler can be done by putting the wax in a small pot and keeping it in a big pot filled with water, place the big pot on the stove and let it boil. Soy wax should be boiled at 150 degrees to 170 degrees Fahrenheit, take care when the wax is already melted as it should not be kept at more than 150 degrees for a long time because if it is kept for too long then the wax could get burnt and the wax color can change to yellow. After the wax has melted properly you can put any color of your choice. After removing the wax from heat you can add some fragrance in it. The best way to add fragrance is by measuring its weight for 1 pound of wax 1.15 fragrance oil is required. As if too much of fragrance is added it might bleed from the candle. Then you can pour the melted wax in the molds and let it cool. Remember not to let the wax temperature go too low as the candle can crack, the temperature should be around 100 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Be careful not to use water for cooling the candle as this can also lead to cracks in the candles.
Though paraffin wax and soy wax candles look the same, but there are some differences. As soy wax is very soft hence is not suitable to make some kind of candles. For instance, novelty candles cannot be made of soy wax, it is also not suitable for making pillar candles, taper candles also can't be made by this wax and for making floating candles with soy wax you should be sure its diameter is not more than 3 inches.
If you have made candles with paraffin then you can easily make them with soy wax. Paraffin and soy both wax make the same candles colored and scented.
