This book is written to assist individuals across the life span and interested in improving their reading, retention and recall. The author has provided several strategies and techniques which the reader can learn at his/her own speed. He includes various exercises to assist in the learning process.
The author highlights several benefits from reading this book: it cost less than formal classes on speed reading; the book should not cause you any anxiety or tire you out; and you will gain self confidence in your newly developed skills. The author does request that you read each chapter in sequence in order to receive the full benefit of the presented information.
The author recommends that you give yourself a head start by reducing distractions, making yourself comfortable, and set time aside to maintain focus and learning. Starting with short period of time and practicing on a regular basis will help in learning the skills necessary to improve your reading, retention and recall. Next chapter focuses on stretching your ability to speed read words to reading phrases. The author provides an example of how to learn how to read phrases. This is then followed with an exercise. Then the book's material moves you from reading phrases to reading sentences. The author provides instructions on how to accomplish this skill. The next chapter provides instruction and an exercise to develop reading two sentences at a time. This is followed up with another chapter on how to eliminate the tendency to retrace your steps and re-read material you have just read. The author provides instruction and an exercise for you to eliminate this tendency.
There is a chapter on how to improve your memory. The author details the steps to improvement:
1) of paying attention;
2) repeating what you want to remember;
3) reviewing the new information each day;
4) the skill of picturing the new information.
The author provides two websites to assist in developing mind-maps, the process of picturing information.
There is a chapter on how to reduce your required reading material for work. The author suggests referring out reading materials to another co-worker; review the pile of reading material and either recycle it or return to sender anything not worth reading; skim through magazines; and highlighting significant information. This chapter also provides another exercise.
Another chapter is focused on investing in you. The author recommends that you invest a minimum of 5% of your time and income to improve yourself. The payoff is by practicing new habits will lead to simple ways to leap ahead.
The next chapter provides information on how to move out of our established comfort zone in order to achieve success and improve your life. The author provides another exercise. How to prepare for an emergency is the following chapter. The author provides information on how to handle emergencies when they arise: increasing awareness; learning the warning signs; and making preparations.
The final chapter focuses on removing barriers to success. Each chapter provides information and exercises to increase your reading speed, retention and recall through the content of each chapter. You are provided with exercises to practice and develop the needed skills while learning important facts and steps to success.
