Once you get your rambunctious child under control, you will need to find ways to maintain good behavior. This is one of the only ways to ensure that all your hard work does not go to waste. It will keep you from falling back into old parenting patterns and bad habits which unfortunately, is all too easy to do.
This is the time to keep consistent and begin to build expectations which lean towards even higher goals. As already mentioned, it is very easy to fall back into old habits and routines. So you will want to make the gap from where you are now to those bad behaviors as large as possible. The old saying 'keeping your house in order' is much easier than getting it in order and is crucial to the consistent behavior you want your child to grow into.
So by using your love and affection to consistently give out-loud praise of good behavior your child will continue building self esteem. This is the time to keep consistent, clear and reasonable expectations, set firm strict limits for your child and then expand on these to keep moving forward.
Here Are The Seven Ways to Maintain Good Behavior.
1. Make a note or list of what has been the most helpful and delivered the most influence over how you achieved the good behavior. So just keep a list of discipline techniques that work the best for you. Also be aware of how these things worked so that you have a reference.
2. Maintain good OPEN communications with your child. Open communications are probably the number one tool that prevents you from falling back into old bad habits and routines.
3. Modeling your desired behavior. This goes without saying but I myself have been guilty of letting things slide when things are going well. When everything is good its easy to behave thoughtlessly. So when you and your child are doing well then try to keep your wits about you. Making sure that you do not get too comfortable is important because once you do you will ultimately find that bad behaviors will creep back up.
4. Continue to supervise from a distance and monitor your child's behavior. Try and watch them in their natural environment and see how things turn out. You will want to make sure that your child is truly behaving the way that you are teaching at all times and not just when you are around.
5. Keeping your expectations realistic and relative to the success. Now that you know they have matured and are more capable than before it is important to adjust your expectations to this new level.
6. Confronting disappointing behavior can sometimes be hard especially when we know how hard they are really trying. An effective parent will never avoid confrontations with their misbehaving child. However, just because you are confronting them does not mean you have to be hard on them. Just make sure that they know you are aware of the situation and that you are disappointed. ( That being said; it is just as important to confront them when they are doing well so that this balances itself out.)
7. Never Stop Learning new discipline techniques and strategies. This is crucial to the upkeep of you and your child's success. Once we think we have learned it all it will bite us in the lower back. There is always something new to learn and keeping this attitude will make it much easier.
Using these seven ways to maintain good behavior is just so much easier than building back up from the beginning or relapsing back into old parenting patterns and bad habits. Another thing to consider is everyone and their behavior is unique so you can add or retract some of these tips to fit your needs. Just keep up on it, remind yourself of how far you have come and it will go much easier for you and your family.
