When you set a goal to lose 5lbs or put on 5lbs of muscle, it is a lot easier than trying to do both. It is possible for some people because of genetic advantages to put on muscle and lose fat, and sometimes it will just happen, but more often than not, you will either do one or the other.

If you increase your intake of good foods and hit the weights and do a fair amount of cardio, you may see both happen if you are lucky.

If it were possible to achieve both, body builders and fitness models wouldn't worry about bulking up with a bit of muscle or cutting cycles to get rid of body fat.

My advice to you is that if you are a frail little weakling, consider seriously just putting on muscle and focus on that, if you an overweight couch hog, focus just on losing fat.

By just focusing on one intensely, often the other will come as an externality - when you go weights your body burns calories, and when you do cardio, you are forcing muscle growth.

Focus on just one and the other will follow in time.
