How to tell the sex on your dwarf hamster. For some people it is easy for them to tell the difference between a male or female. But the dwarf hamster is a little harder to tell due to its size. When determining the hamster sexing it is better if you get the help from a veterinarian or a breeder especially if you are new to raising a hamster with any breed of hamsters.
When purchasing your dwarf hamster from a pet store have them help you find out the sex of the hamster you want. If they do not know, then you should reconsider buying from that pet store, as they should know how to tell the sexing of their pets. Find a pet store that does know how to determine the sexing of their hamsters.
Hamster sexing can not be determined until the hamster is at least 3 to 4 weeks of age. You should not purchase a dwarf hamster until it reaches at least 5 weeks of age. The ideal age is 5 to 10 weeks old. Make sure the hamster is in good health by watching it closely on how the hamster is acting and look to see if the fur is shiny and in good condition.
If you decide to go ahead and purchase a dwarf hamster from someone that can not determine the sex or if you have a hamster that had babies then there are some things you can look for to determine the sex. But you will have to wait till the little ones are of age.
First thing you need to figure out is to find a way to flip your hamster over on its back. You can do this by either cupping the hamster in your hand gently by having one hand over the body and the other hand underneath its belly. Gently turn the hamster over to see the hamster belly. You can also hold the hamster by the scruff of the neck, but do it gently and make sure the hamster is secure so that it does not kick around. If this does not work then put your hamster in a clear container and look underneath to see the hamster belly.
Female dwarf hamster sexing is a little difficult to tell but if you look closely she will have two holes that are very close together. The vaginal opening is right next to the anus area, they are so close together that it may look like one opening. She will also have 2 rows of nipples on her belly. The female hamster will have a more rounded backside than what the male has.
Male dwarf hamster sexing is a little easier to see. He has two holes too but there is a gap of 1 centimeter long between the penile and the anus area. You will also notice that the backside of him is also more elongated and will have a bulge under the tail area.
Dwarf hamster sexing can be a little more difficult due to their size. But if you can not figure it out than find a breeder or a veterinarian to help you.
