Dry Skin Itch Caused by Eczema

What is Eczema?

Eczema is a skin condition that caused our skin to become inflamed, resulting in rashes and severe itching. In fact, instead of the rash causing the itching, eczema is referred to as the itch that causes the rash. What starts out as extremely dry skin can quickly develop into a rash.

Children are often victims of eczema although they often outgrow the condition whereas adults with eczema tend to have it most of their life. Unfortunately, there is no cure for eczema. Eczema is a combination of dry skin and allergies. It may result in dry skin, dry patches and occasional flare-ups where the skin becomes red with patches that seem to be almost oozing.

Although many people become embarrassed by their dry itchy skin, there is no reason to feel ashamed. It's not contagious and it's not something that you can prevent. You can, however, prevent repeated flare-ups or keep them to a minimum.

Ways to Prevent Dry Skin

Although you may not be able to totally eliminate the dry skin itching caused by eczema, there are steps you can take to reduce your chances of having dry skin. There are many things in life that we can't avoid but by eliminating the things you can, you'll be doing a lot towards reducing the dry skin itching.

Use plenty of moisturizer and this can't be overemphasized. Use a moisturizing lotion daily - several times a day, in fact.

Avoid using hot water when bathing or showering because hot water dries out your skin. Luke warm water will do just as well.

Do not rub your skin dry after a bath or shower. Pat your skin gently instead.

Avoid using plain soap. Use soap with moisturize in it and one without perfume.

Try to use cotton as much as possible for clothing as well as bedding. Avoid synthetic or wool fabrics, which tend to irritate the skin more.

Avoid using scented lotions or bubble bath.

Use a mild detergent without dye or harsh chemicals. Remember your clothing spends many hours a day rubbing against your skin.

Watch for foods that may be causing allergies and avoid them. Allergies play an important part in not only causing eczema but also in triggering itching attacks.

Avoid allergens like mold, dust, pet dander as these also can trigger attacks.
