If you're driving in the snow, there are several things to keep in mind. First of all, you want to make sure that when you are driving that you are doing so slowly. Often times when the snow has just fallen, it is difficult to tell whether or not there is black ice underneath the surface of the snow if it has just fallen. If the snow has been there for a while, then there is the possibility also that the snow may actually be frozen over.
Depending on where you live and in what part of the country, it may be a while before a snow plow comes into contact with your neighborhood. A few years back, in the state of North Carolina, there was a terrible snow storm that caused a very fine layer of ice to form over the roadways. Because the department of transportation wasn't prepared for such precipitation, the roads froze over before hundreds of people could make it home from work. The result? Many people found themselves stuck in several hours worth of traffic all because there were so many accidents.
I, myself, was heading back from class at the university in what should have only taken me thirty minutes. However, due to the fact that I could barely stay on the road without slipping off, and the fact that there was nowhere to go because everyone was running into each other. After being on the road for almost 9 hours, I was approximately two to three blocks away from my apartment when I tapped my brakes ever so lightly. Just that light tap sent my Jeep into a tailspin, and I wound up doing a full 360 degree spin before landing in a ditch on the side of the road. Luckily, no one was hurt. It just goes to show you that you really need to be careful when you are driving in inclement weather, because you never know what could happen.
