Doris's Diner and Wine Bar Review

Following a rather bright and colourful emailed invitation, I recently visited the newly opened Doris's Diner and Wine bar in Glebe, Sydney to sample the culinary journey. The invitation suggested that it was the gastronomic event of the week, and I was both thrilled and excited to see what this trendy spot in this quiet suburb had to offer.

Having previously visited the venue on other occasions, I was somewhat disappointed to see that there had been little done to improve the décor, with the main changes in environment, the extremely high furniture which was somewhat uncomfortable to guests.

The food was unexpected to say the least. The bruschetta entree was of a very good standard and the main course (non-beef option) was again of high quality. Unfortunately, the chef (and owner) Doris made several personal appearances to explain what food was being prepared and whilst this was good customer service, it became somewhat irritating when the she would not leave the guests alone by constantly talking.

The wine and drinks were of good quality, however I would not recommend the Margarita's and they are sub-standard when compared with other establishments in the area. I am yet to understand the invitation to "bring your own toothbrush" which I am only assume is a reference to one of the cocktails on the menu.

The music in the venue was erratic at best with a mixed vibe constantly being demonstrated to guests. This lead to a schizophrenic and eclectic mix of chill out, pop, classic and full on dance music which confused all those present.

The bathrooms did not have clean towels available and it is expected that guests have to ask for soap to ensure cleanliness. The unisex toilet door did not close properly and I can imagine that this would make this uncomfortable for some guests.

The cost of the Doris's Diner and Wine bar was not cheap, and I felt that I was not going to be allowed to forget the experience in a hurry. This was a 5 star expense for 3 star quality and one which Doris should review for future customers.

Overall, this was not the positive and enticing experience that the bright and colourful invitation suggested. Whilst I would not discourage people from going to Doris's Diner and Wine Bar, I would however go with a large wallet, and fairly low expectation compared with that on the invitation.
