Don't Make This Error When You Order Traffic Signs

It's often a bit daunting when ordering traffic signs, especially when doing it for the first time. But actually, it is a great deal more simple than it might appear at first - just make sure you approach a quality supplier, and they will be able to guide you through the whole process, and be able to advise you as appropriate.

Just a quick note to start with though - please note the following information only applies to those ordering traffic signs from Great Britain. If you are based elsewhere, you need to ask your own regulatory authority to get the right advice.

So what is the main error that can be made in ordering road signs for publicly-controlled highway?

Basically, placing an order for road signs from a supplier who does not make them in accordance with Department for Transport rules. (Told you this wouldn't be too complicated, didn't I?)

Most suppliers of course will do exactly that if they want to stay in business for longer than a week or two, but it's still your responsibility to always ensure that the signage you receive will be fully compliant with all the relevant rules and regulations.

In actual fact, a quality road sign supplier will create signs that are fully in accordance not only with British but also with European Quality Standards, so make sure you enquire about this before placing your order. The best suppliers will be able to provide every sign detailed in The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002 book - so you'll literally just need to inform them as to exactly which sign(s) you are looking for.

In manufacturing the signs, the supplier you choose will have to refer to working drawings, important sections of the Traffic Signs Manual and other references provided by the Dept. for Transport on their website... there are exacting specifications for things like the alphabet that has to be used (lettering style etc.), the distance between arrows and other images, the spacing between lines, and more.

However manufacturers with many years of experience in working in the sign industry will know precisely what they are doing and will doubtless have supplied the same or similar sign several times previously, so you can just leave it in their capable hands. Most manufacturers nowadays use digital printing technology to produce the signs onto the right material, and turn around times can be rapid.

Naturally, the same regulations do not apply for road signs that are not due to be placed onto a public highway, but if you have responsibility for traffic safety, it makes sense that the same rules are followed so as not to cause driver misunderstanding.

Hopefully you should now have the full confidence to purchase the road signs you require.
