Don't Forget These 11 Little Things When You Start a Dollar Store

Expert Author Bob Hamilton

Have you ever started a new business before? If so, you know the many little things those who are about to start a dollar store will be facing as they plan, prepare and then actually open their business. The more obvious tasks such as finding a location, negotiating and signing a lease agreement, identifying the right merchandise, vendors and then completing orders, setting up the store equipment and fixtures, interviewing, staffing and training employees are more obvious. While many of the tasks are very small, successfully completing them is important indeed. In this article I focus on eleven of the little things those who are about to start a dollar store must remember to do to guarantee a successful opening for their business.

1. Identify and register your business name with the appropriate State agency.

2. Obtain your business Federal Tax Identification Number.

3. Obtain appropriate business insurance coverage.

4. Register your business with the appropriate city, county and state agencies.

5. Set up your advertising and promotions for the grand opening and then for following the opening of your new business.

6. Order all of the required office supplies including pencils, pens, note paper, printer paper, receipt paper, a Rolodex for business cards, a pencil sharpener, paper clips, rubber bands and all other needed supplies.

7. Purchase office desk(s) and chair(s), side chairs, and a fire-safe, locking file cabinet, and all other office and break room furniture and fixtures.

8. Purchase and install all required computer(s) and printer(s).

9. Purchase and install copier machine and FAX machine.

10. Order all required printing supplies. Don't forget to include your business cards as well as all needed business forms.

11. Establish your business bank accounts.

Those who start a dollar store often focus on all of the major actions required to open the doors of their new store. In addition to the actions listed at the beginning of this article those major actions include completing tenant improvements to the location, receiving incoming freight, designing, purchasing and installing all outdoor and indoor signage for your new business, stocking shelves and even more. However, even though the eleven actions listed above may seem to be small, they are all mission critical for those who are starting a new business. Never lose sight of the importance of each. Be sure they are started and properly completed prior to opening for business. Things will run much more smoothly if you do.
