Don't Be Fooled By Diet Myths

These days diets are almost a bigger fad than clothes. It seems that each new season blows in a new way to drop weight fast. Whether it is by detox or eating all day long, there is always a quick fix that will get you back into your skinny jeans.

We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but most of these claims are false. While some have no scientific data to show that they work, others might make you lose weight but you will see those pounds creep back on as soon as you stop your crash diet.

One of the biggest trends in dieting right now is detox, or a liquid diet. This diet calls for you to consume only specially formulated drinks several times a day. Now, we will say that you will certainly lose weight pretty quickly because you are not consuming many calories and the rest of what you had is leaving your body by means of diarrhea; however, once you get off this three-day diet the pounds will be back because your body is in starvation mode. Because your body thinks that it is starving, it will automatically absorb every little bit of fat that you put into it.

The other extreme is the diet that calls for you to eat eight small meals a day rather than three average sized meals. While you are allowed to snack all day, you must take the word snack seriously; think a handful of almonds. Researchers have recently found that this diet does not prove to be any more successful than a diet that consists of three average-sized healthy meals.

Finally, one of the most accepted diets is the low carbohydrates/no carbohydrates diet. This diet calls for you to eat mainly foods that are high in protein. The problem with this diet is that it will cause you to be groggy and irritable because carbohydrates are your body's source for energy. While it is true that you should omit unhealthy carbs such as refined foods and sugars, you have to have some source of carbs in your diet. A few healthy carb choices are fruits, vegetables whole-grain brown rice and cereal.

The bottom line is this: weight loss equals the calories that you eat minus the calories that you burn daily. If you burn more calories than you eat, then you will lose weight; however, if you eat more calories than you burn, then you will gain weight.

As your mother use to always say, "Good things come to those who wait." Losing weight takes time. There is no quick fix to those last 10 pounds that you are dying to shed. Stick with the original idea of eating right and exercise and you will slowly but surely start to see the results that you want.
