Everybody talks about the value of having a great domain name for an online business.  So you know that you need to have one, but why exactly is that the case?  What does a good domain name do for your online business and how can you ensure that you end up with one?  Use this quick guide to help you get your website off the ground and running with an effective domain name.

Just for any clarification if anyone is still unsure - the domain name is your website address.  The domain name includes not just the words but also the suffix at the end, which is the abbreviation that finished the domain name off and classifies your site in a certain way, both officially and in the eyes of browsers.

You have a choice between .com, .net, .info, and many other domain name endings.  In the majority of instances, a .com will be preferred because it's the most mainstream.  However, there are uses for the others as well, and they could be cheaper or easier to obtain.

Having a relatively short, easy to remember domain name is essential because people are more likely to return to your site if they can easily remember the address.  Additionally, if you have a short domain name that has to do directly with your business or industry, you may even begin to see a lot of direct, type-in traffic.  This is when somebody types a generic phrase with a .com ending directly into their browser to see what comes up. 

Remember -- your domain name is what identifies you on the Internet.  It's your home base, and it serves a lot of different functions.   Make sure you select it with care.
