Dog Training Tips - Puppy Adapted to Being Handled

Expert Author Raymond Willis

For proper puppy training you need to get your puppy adapted to being handled by not only you and your family, but by others as well. This is important in the puppies' near future and as he gets older. You don't want your puppy to fear people, especially vets, and the best way to teach your puppy is with positive dog training.

When you get a new puppy your first thought might not be to immediately start puppy training. All you want to do is love on him and play with him and if you are like most dog lovers, you want to bask in that cute puppy breath.

Being handled doesn't just mean being touched by others, it also means being handled for other reasons as well. Your puppy is going to need inoculations, grooming, nails trimmed, etc. By getting your puppy adapted to being handled you can help ensure fewer headaches when you take him to get a check up at the vet or get his nails clipped. Perhaps down the road you and your dog have become part of a search and rescue team, often the dogs are loaded into trucks and planes by other people. Socialization of your dog is one of the most if not the most important aspect of dog training. The more you expose your dog to people, other dogs, loud noises and chaotic situations the more solid your dog will be.

Some dog socialization advice is to teach that not every person is a threat. You should do this carefully and you should also know that dogs do have instincts, especially as they get older. So, just because your dog is adapted to being touched and handled, and being around other people as a puppy does not mean he is more likely do be dog-napped when he is older. His instincts will guide him on people that may potentially be a threat to him.

Take your puppy to the vet while he is still a puppy so he starts to learn who the vet is and that the vet isn't someone to be scared of. Your puppy is going to need a series of shots and the vet will give your puppy these shots. Frequently visit the vet for regular check ups as well, this will get him to know the vet and help the puppy adapting to be handled by other people than just you and your family.

Your vet can give you dog training advice to help you train your dog to getting used to having his nails clipped and being groomed by using positive dog training. When he has his nails clipped, give him praise for being good. While he is being groomed, give him positive reinforcement throughout by petting him and talking softly and encouragingly to him.
