Dog Training For Service Dogs Requires Much Dedication

Expert Author Okereke Uma

Simple dog training sessions to teach your dog to sit, walk, listen, stop, eat and so on, is very time consuming and requires a lot of patience and dedication week after week. In the case of service dogs the same routine training would take not weeks but months, especially those dogs being trained for search and rescue, police and guide dogs.

Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds are typical for service dog training because of their temperament and physical uniqueness and general behaviors. The special training for this type of dogs is assertiveness and not aggressiveness on the part of the owner. The dog should be trained to obey order commands and not be stubborn.

Service dogs like humans may find themselves in difficult and dangerous situations, though like humans they do not intentionally get into these situations. The right dog training will give search dogs the right mind to handle the situation effectively. We have heard of such dogs that have swum into freezing rivers to save a drowning child or pulling down ice through an avalanche to save the victims from death.

The service dog training program will start only after the first year of the dog getting accustomed to its trainer. The actual training for such dogs could run into more than 17 to 19 months of additional training for extra hours each day, depending on the nature of training the dogs are meant to undergo.

Service or search dog training teaches the dogs to be aggressive towards the attacker and polite to the victim, it has to cope with the noise of gun shots and to be focused on the given task without getting distracted by any other sights or sounds. In addition to these they also have to learn to adapt to smoke and enter burning buildings to look for victims, to chase speeding vehicles etc.

The service of these search dogs are extended also to the hearing and sight impaired people who are alone and need company to take them around town safely. For such people guide dogs are trained to lead their blind master to the wheel chair, to cross the road safely, to help with shopping at shopping malls, answering the caller at the door and many such useful domestic chores.

With the best dog training classes dogs have become a blind owner's partner, a family's friend, a lonely person's refuge and a joy to society. Take care of dogs when you see them on the street, don't harm them, as they are all about doing their jobs for humans.
