Not everyone can be a successful dog breeder. If you are willing to spend the time to properly learn how to breed puppies who are healthy, and possess a strong commitment to your pets, dog breeding can be a rewarding experience for you. You can have a lot of fun while doing it!

Dog breeding can bring great joy, from pregnancy, to delivery and raising the puppies for the first few weeks of their life. You should care more than just about your financial earnings: It is important that you love and care about the dogs you have under your wing. This will in turn produce happy and healthy puppies for good homes.

To be a successful dog breeder, you will need to read more than one small article can supply, but here are some things to consider. A good dog breeder must know everything about the animals under their care. You will need to know what time of year is best for breeding, how to provide the best environment for mating, birth and early care. The breeder must also learn how to maintain a successful small business, and know all of the ins and outs of that particular business. Most of all, good dog breeders have to be willing, to invest the time and effort, to continue to learn.

The female dog is the most essential building block in dog breeding. Typically the female will be in heat every six to seven months. She may go into heat when she is very young; however, she may not be mature enough to carry, deliver, and care for the puppies. Breeders should wait until the dog is physically mature before breeding; for some breeds full maturity may not be reached until the dog is two or more years old.

The best person to help you interpret tests and help you decide when the best time is for dog breeding is your veterinary. It is important to wait until your vet tells you your female dog is ready to breed. If you don't wait until she is ready, you could lose her and the puppies.

After the veterinarian gives your dog the right to proceed, there are a couple of things that you will still need to take care of. The most important is finding the right male to breed with your dog. The potential mate must have a clean bill of health and if you are interesting in registering the puppy, make sure that the male dog is a purebred.

The male needs to be comfortable in order to mate. This is why it is better to bring the female to the male's territory.
