Over one MILLION people each month search for ways to make money online from their web site. As of this writing, and, according to Google, there are actually 1,500,000 searches per month done on the phrase "make money online". It's obviously a very in-demand topic.
There are many ways to make money from your site and I'll discuss a few of them here in a bit but first I want to be realistic.
There are hundreds, if not thousands of products online that all teach you the "secret" to making money online. And they all promise big and wonderful things; big cars, big paychecks and cash flowing into your account day and night. And all you have to do to achieve the same thing is...
...create a web site.
To put it succinctly, BALONEY!
Just like everything else in life worth having, it takes hard work and dedication to truly become a success online.
It doesn't happen in droves at first, and it won't happen overnight. But with steady work, and perseverance, you will start to see those trickles of income come in which can eventually grow into a full-time income for you; if you put in the work.
That being said, what follows are some ways that the beginner can start to earn money from their site and with good work-ethic, you will start to see a steady income start to take shape.
Google's AdSense Program
If you've ever come across another website that was displaying ads that had "Sponsored by Google" on them, you've found a website that is using AdSense ads. These ads are part of Google's AdSense program. This program is completely free to sign up for for any website owner.
Once you've signed up, Google will take a look at your website and once your site has been approved, they'll provide you with some special code that you then place on your own web pages.
Whenever someone clicks on one of these ads on your own site, you'll start to earn an income.
These ads come from companies and individuals who are paying to have their ads displayed within Google's search engine via Google's AdWords program. I know it can get a little bit tricky to understand the differences between these two programs since they're so similar but just to put it simply:
- AdSense ads are ads placed on your own site where YOU can earn an income.
- AdWords ads are ads that companies and individuals pay for in order to be listed within Google's sponsored results.
Google's AdSense program isn't the only game in town that will pay you, as a website owner, for displaying ads on your site. Here are a few others who will do the same:
- Kontera
- AdBrite
- Chitika
Affiliate Marketing
Another way to earn an income online is to become an affiliate marketer. It's very likely that you're familiar with this term, but in the event you're not, here's how it works.
As an affiliate marketer, you become the "go-between" between the customer (your site visitor) and the owner of the product. You place a link to someone's product on your own site and whenever someone clicks on that link and then subsequently makes a purchase, you earn a commission on that purchase.
Many people make a good living online using affiliate marketing and it's easy to get started with most affiliate networks.
Some of the more popular ones are:
- ClickBank
- Commission Junction
- LinkShare.com
Sell Your Own Stuff
Another way to make money from your web site is to sell your own products or services. Maybe you create physical products like jewelry or candles that you currently sell.
If you have physical products for sale you can create an entire online business to showcase your products. One way to do this is to use Yahoo's Merchant program which let's you create a website, get web hosting AND integrate an easy-to-use shopping cart system.
Alternatively you can use PayPal or Google Checkout to add payment buttons to your site and send invoices.
Selling Your Own Digital Products
If you have a digital product for sale such as an eBook or a piece of software, one of the more popular places online to sell that product is at ClickBank. You'll notice that this is one of the locations mentioned earlier when we were talking about affiliate marketing.
By placing your product for sale at ClickBank you have at your disposal a whole host of affiliates who will help you sell that eBook.
This list is by no means comprehensive when it comes to making money off of your website, but these can get you started in the right direction and are all fairly easy to put into practice.
