This is probably going to be one of the first questions you ask yourself when you start out with any kind of campaign: do public relations matter?
Its a good question to ask. America has in fact seen that negative PR can in fact be good PR, as is the case for the various sex tape scandals of Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, and the like. We've also seen that the new media landscape that many companies, businesses, actors, musicians, and artists are taking the marketing into their own hands. After all, with the availability of the tools for use, it makes sense to start marketing your campaign yourself.
But if you've tried this angle, you probably know the problem: because it's so easy, everyone's doing it. That means that where once money played a factor in people taking artistic and entrepreneurial risks, everyone is now taking a chance at a music career, or a website, or a business. This means that you're going to have a very difficult time rising above the crowd quickly.
And this is where PR comes into the picture. PR professionals offer you that insight of years of experience. They can help you formulate a story that will catch the media's attention. Let's face it -- a Twitter account won't cut it. Neither will a website. But an interesting and unique angle to your story will help you gain traffic and media attention. Remember that many of the internet's largest websites are companies that have been in business for decades -- Coke, Toyota, MTV. Don't underestimate traditional media in the wake of the "do-it-yourself" age.
Does PR matter? It matters now more than ever.
