Does Hypnosis Work and is Hypnosis Effective?

Before I give you the answer (which is a most definitely "yes"), let us explore the science behind hypnosis, and what it actually does to the brain. When you delve into studies that have been performed on hypnosis and brain chemistry, your belief in this mind practice becomes harder to ignore or suppress. People talk about the benefits of hypnosis, what hypnosis can do for you, etc., but they never explain why, or how, hypnosis actually works and what it physically does to the brain and body.

A study performed at Cornell University's medical school theorized that hypnosis affects areas of the brain. Which parts, they did not know; however, they went about to see if their hypothesis was true. They took 16 healthy adults for this study, and hypnotized them so that they would read certain words on the computer screen easily. The words were the names of colors, but were typed in a different color than what the name entailed (ex: Green was typed in red font, etc.).

Those who were more suggestible to hypnosis read the words easily. Brain scans showed that while these participants were in hypnosis, certain brain area functionality were lowered, allowing more leeway into the subconscious mind to accept suggestions. Therefore hypnosis can actually provide a pathway into the part of your brain that can accept suggestions and make them true in your own life.

A study at Harvard University Medical School also showed that people who meditate or perform relaxed visualization (in other words hypnosis) showed that physical parts of their brains actually grew. In fact, areas associated with memory, cognition and sensory perception were physically strengthen. Discover that meditation, visualization and hypnosis can grow physical parts of the brain is extraordinary and revolutionary, and is important for aging and those with attention deficiencies.

So, does hypnosis really work? The science tells us so, and more and more research is being done on the brain. In fact, many leading experts in neuroscience do not understand how the majority of the brain works, making it a fascinating part of the human to study and explore.
