It happens all the time. John Doe comes to the forum and says, "Please critique my sales page" and then after you're given your honest opinion, they rip your head off. They first tell you that you don't know what you're talking about and then they start defending what they did and why they did it. Tell me I'm wrong. I'm sure you yourself have seen this lots of times. Nobody REALLY wants your honest opinion. But do you know why? Well, this article is going to explain why.
People, for the most part, are not looking for feedback on their work, good or bad. They're looking for validation. They're looking for somebody to pat them on the back and say, "Great job!" By getting that validation, it reassures them that they are on the right track with their business. That means that the money will soon be coming in. By finding out that what they're doing is flawed, that means that the money won't be coming in or won't be coming in as much as they'd like it to. And they can't accept that.
That's the problem. The question is, how do we solve it? Because make no mistake about it. If you have this problem and don't solve it, you're going to be doing your business a great disservice. Personally, I hunger for people to tell me what I'm doing wrong or how I can do something better. Yes, after over seven years of marketing online, I still make mistakes. Everybody does. We're only human after all. Difference between me and most people is I learn from my mistakes.
For example, years ago, I used to think that my way was the ONLY way. That I had all the answers. Oh yes, I was one cocky little SOB. But as time went on and people began to point out how absolutes can be very dangerous, I began to see that they were right. Today, there are few things that I state absolutely. Truth is, when it comes to running a business online, everything needs to be tested. Because what works for John Doe may not work for you. If you learn nothing else from this article, learn that much. Absolutes will kill you.
Personally, I don't know anybody on this planet who knows it all. I got a sale one day from a very big name marketer. I was shocked that he'd buy one of my products. Why? Because I assumed that he knew everything. Know what he said to me when I told him of my surprise? He said, "Why? I don't know everything." Made me realize that the idea we have of some people or classes of people can be so far off the mark that it's ludicrous. Yeah, we're all human folks.
So if you really want to improve yourself then you need to do two things. The first thing is to ask for advice. The second is to actually consider it when it's given to you. You don't have to automatically accept it. Consider the source. But don't automatically dismiss it because it wasn't what you wanted to hear.
