Do you know your true worth? I think the vast majority of us undersell our real value. We get stuck worrying about the small percentage of people that have more expertise than us, rather than the vast majority who have less, and usually much less. If you have dedicated your life to something, there is a fair chance that you know more about it than most people. You should be able to leverage this knowledge and be proud of it.
I bring this up today for a couple reasons. I have been pouring through all of the emails I get from the big names in social media and internet marketing. I am at the point now where I get emails that are worthless to me because I know it. I received a Twitter tactics email from a big name just yesterday full of tips I have been using for over a year. I know that I can be a valuable asset to people who know less than me. That is probably true for you as well.
Another activity has led me to realize this. A colleague and I have been contacting local small business centers to offer a free talk on maximizing your web presence. One office we called up stopped us dead in our tracks and told us sorry we already have an eBusiness expert that gives talks. She told us the name, and I will withhold it from this article since I don't want to dump on people. We did a little research and learned some interesting facts...
- This person has a twitter account last updated over a year ago.
- They have about 100 twitter followers.
- Their website looks terrible.
- The website is not search engine optimized.
- The website is completely static and never updated.
- They have an old Blogger based blog that was last updated two years ago.
- No real presence on ANY social bookmarking or media website.
- The website Alexa ranking is over 20 million.
This is who we were rudely cut off for. This is who the small business center in a major Ontario city gets to speak to their members about their online presence. If this person can be validated by an government speaking gig, then how much are we worth? How much are YOU worth?
This shook my world really. As you read this right now, does it make you think more highly of what you have to offer? I bet it does!
Don't ever discount what you bring to the table, because if you feel you are an expert in some area then act like one. I guarantee there are people who know a lot less than you but are making more money. If you feel like you have a lot to offer it will change your approach. You will feel more confident, and approach potential deals with a killer instinct. The biggest mistake you can make is to undervalue yourself, and I guarantee some people reading this article are doing just that. Don't be "that guy", if you have something to offer the world, start acting like it.
