This is the ultimate minimalist sentiment.
I believe that it has merit yet it requires much explanation to fully comprehend what is meant by, "do less".
If this were a truly minimalist post, I would have left it at that. I feel, though, that many would not see the point of two words, much less comprehend what I mean by it so I'll explain.
"Do less," means cutting back on everything that is unnecessary. Capitalism has us chasing things we do not need, material possessions which serve little purpose other than to amuse us for a short while and then become useless, lifeless items which clutter our space and pollute our planet.
Minimalism is not some New Age bullshit that promises you riches beyond your belief, fulfillment and fame. On the contrary, minimalism is one of the oldest systems of belief in the world.
Think back in our history, there were times when humankind survived with little, we thrived in a harsh world by living light, material possessions were not even thought of before the industrial revolution
and capitalism put a price on our time, on our lives.
It is no wonder that people suffer from stress related illness, why there is so much corruption and greed in modern society.
Please understand that modern living and technology has opened up new methods in healthcare and lifestyle improvement, yet on it's underbelly is a dark and sinister force, greed.
Greed and materialism go hand in hand.
We come to want things.
Crave things.
Need things which we believe are necessary for living.
Advertising has us chasing impossible dreams and false lifestyles. Not to sound completely nihilistic but we are far from perfect.
What minimalism offers is stress-reduced living, free from clutter of your environment and freedom from clutter in your mind and body. True minimalism is all about selfcontrol and taking a deep look at your life and the excess which is bogging you down.
• Do you really need a bigger tv or a bigger house?
• Have you considered the detremental effects many of the possessions you crave have on our environment?
• Minimalism is green living and healthy living. It promotes self reflection and aids you toward true happiness, free from the unnecessary. Do less may sound like your simply not doing as much, or being lazy yet this is a misconception.
• What it means is doing less of the unnecessary.
Without the unnecessary, you are able to focus on what really matters in your life, such as your goals and dreams, your relationships or your intelligence.
What things in your life can you think of which are unsatisfactory, what things weigh you down and tire you out? Perhaps it is time to consider these things on the grand scale of things.
Do you really need all the junk lying around your bedroom, your house? Could you let go of the unnecessary and embrace your life with an open mind and and open heart?
Think about it.
