If you're planning to build a backyard shed or storage shed of some type on your property, it will be very important to learn as much as you can about the laws in your area and determine whether or not you will need a building permit before you ever begin.

Every city and town is different in their laws regarding building permits but every city has some type of law. If you live in the country, outside of city limits, you most likely won't have to worry about building permits. If you want to build on private property in the country, you can build however you want.

In the city, however, you will need building permits for certain types and sizes of structures and you will need to be sure your shed meets the regulations of your city. You may be required to get a permit and there could be restrictions placed on where and how you can do construction on your storage shed. Don't try to sneak by building it without one and hope you don't get caught or it can really come back to bite you in the event that you are discovered. If you're going to do it, you should do it right and this includes getting a building permit.

You don't even want to listen to someone who's done it before as zoning laws and regulations can change each year.
