Diversity Employment As Good Business - Understanding the American Client

There is no denying that America is full people of all different nationalities, personalities, and backgrounds. Embracing the diversity of our nation is absolutely essential, then, for understanding potential client bases across the board. Diversity employment is one way to approach this matter creatively-opening up the possibility for employee-to-customer relations that are extensive and more effective.

Who are you serving?

As mentioned, your client base has the potential for a wide range of diversity. Though we may think that "business is business," this certainly is not a blanket statement that should be taken for granted. Business is conducted in a variety of ways, depending on cultural background and education. Certain cultures practice particular customs when it comes to business dealings-from different ways of speaking, to entertaining potential customers. Certain backgrounds require very up-front dealings while others ceremonially beat around the bush. Understanding the business style of your clients is key to practicing and retaining good business.

What does this have to do with diversity?

Though hiring an employee that is Latino may not directly help you understand Asian business culture, per se, it does provide opportunities for all employees to broaden their scope of communication to that which involves culture that may be different from their own. In this way, diversity employment could build bridges to open discussion that facilitate effective dealings in the future. It also provides the opportunity to gain knowledge about different communication styles among different cultures. Any possibility for more effective communication will lead to a more successful company.

 What is diversity?

When we generally think of "diversity," the first thing that comes to mind is race or nationality. This is obviously one factor of diversity, but it is also important to remember other diverse characteristics. Every person takes with them to work valuable experiences that can be brought to the table for a greater understanding. Be sure to understand diversity in a holistic way when recruiting your employees.

Looking at diversity as an opportunity to share these experiences will help you maximize the potential of diversity employment and communication with future clients. Keep an open mind, and understand that knowing your client is the best way to do good business.
