Dispelling the Myth That Cheap Drum Sets Sound Brutal

Expert Author Keith McDonnell

OK I have been playing drums for years. Since my early teens, about 17 or 18 years playing, and one thing that I have come across time and time again is drummers that think you need to buy the newest top of the range kit to sound good. Well in the words of two very funny and smart guys from discovery channel, 'Myth Busted!'

My first kit was bought for about 10 bucks and was falling apart, but I did not care, I needed something to pound on, and after getting a new set of skins on it and spending some time tuning it, it sounded great. I used this kit for about a year or two until it was time to start gigging and I needed a more steady kit for on stage and bumping around in vans and the likes. This next kit again was bought on a budget, this time it was a chrome Pearl export, probably built in the 80's but still solid as a rock, I think I spent about 200 bucks on this one, and again it was a little beaten up but when freshly skinned she sounded amazing! Believe it or not. I still have this chrome export, although it was recently replaced with a newer model for studio use I have kept it for gigging because even after all this time it still sounds great!

So if you think that you need the newest and best kit just to sound good remember this... you can have the greatest kit and not know how to tune or play it, and sound terrible, or you can buy a kit that you can afford and simply educate yourself in drum tuning and playing and make it sound great!
