Discus fish has been marketed in Malaysia since 1985 and now in 2010, the local market is still poor. If we are to visit aquarium shops, we can hardly find discus fish compared to fighting fish and guppies fish. If we were to find one, the quality of the fish is below par and the price is not cheap too. However, Malaysia is famous of discus fish in international arena simply because we produced a lot of discus exporters here. Our exporters survive because of their initiative in developing new strains ongoing, and also because of dollar currency value. Be careful that some breeders who claim themselves as exporters but do not have holding tanks at farm, that means they just act as trader. The delivered fish are at the risks of catching all type of disease since no quarantine procedure is done properly. Eventually these exporters are banned internationally and this cause a bad name to Malaysia.
If we ask teenagers, what is discus fish, majority do not know because they are not exposed to this discus in their schools. It is a sad phenomena and the Discus association is to be blamed. Other major concern is that the discus business has been politicized by a few bad apples.
There are however a number of reputable breeders in Malaysia which produce high quality discus at reasonable prices. We hope Malaysian will continue to expand local market especially for Malay race by offering education, good pricing and many more benefit like creating a Discus Bid and Auction website, which is the first in Malaysia and the world.
Malaysia continues to face fierce competition from other countries like Thailand in term of pricing, but we are the best in producing high grade fish. The next trend in discus will be Bulldog strains which captured excellent first impression amongst discus enthusiasts.
Good works to be continued!
