Discover the Foods That Can Be Fatal Or Hazardous to Your Dog

Let's face it, a dog will eat just about anything if given the opportunity. As pet owners it's our responsibility to make sure that dangerous poisons and chemicals are out of reach for our dogs. But did you know there are certain foods your dog should avoid as well?

Some of the foods listed below are hazardous to your dogs health or can be even fatal if ingested in large or small amounts.

The Foods All Dogs Should Avoid Are:

Chocolate: As much as we may love the taste of chocolate, it isn't good for dogs to eat. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. Did you know that that just 3 oz. of baking chocolate can kill a medium size dog? Milk chocolate is less harmful in a very tiny amount, but if your dog ended up eating a lot of it, he could get very sick or even die.

Xylitol: This is used as an artificial sweetener in many products and may be toxic to dogs.

Large amounts of grapes or raisins: They have been attributed to acute kidney failure in dogs. If they eat a few, it's okay but if they have consumed a lot it's best to call your vet.

Onions: They can induce hemolytic anemia in dogs. Hemolytic anemia is a condition in which there are not enough red blood cells in the blood, due to the premature destruction of red cells.

Raw egg whites: They contain a protein that is called avidin. Avidin binds up the B vitamin biotin that robs the dogs ability to use the biotin. Cooking raw egg whites gets rid of the avidin, making the safe to eat.

Coffee and Tea: Contains caffeine that is consumed and loved by people but is very bad for dogs.

Macadamia Nuts In large quantities: These nuts can cause temporary paralysis of the hindquarters in a dog. The paralysis ends up wearing off, after time, but it's very scary to witness when it happens.

Other Dangerous Products To Avoid:

Acetaminophen: This is dangerous for dogs. If you must give him an over the counter pain killer, than Buffered Aspirin is your best bet.

Anti-Freeze and Other Poisons - Anti-freeze tastes sweet to dogs, but it's deadly. Never keep any chemical whether it be in your garage or home where your dog may have access to it. Dogs are curious creatures by nature and don't know if something is good or bad for them. Just a tiny amount ingested could be fatal to your dog.
