Positive parenting is not a new age parenting concept and its positive effects have been seen by many. The basic concept of positive parenting is simple, act in a positive manner in all situations. It's easier to focus and direct attention to something that it is to stop something. The classic example "Don't think of a pink elephant". These core concepts can easily be applied to children of all ages. Here are essential values:
1. Focus On The Positive
When your child is doing something you don't want them to do, find something they can do. This is essential when you are dealing with a toddler. The reason is because they most often don't know what to do when someone says stop. They are still learning what is acceptable. Show them and they will know the things they can do.
2. It's The Behavior Not The Child
When your child is doing something bad, it's because they are bad, they are just doing something you do not accept. Every child is good, it is just their behavior that can sometimes be unacceptable. So make sure your child knows they are good and it is just what they are doing that is bad.
3. Tell Them You Love Them
Children thrive knowing that you love them and knowing that they are accepted regardless of what they do. By doing this, you teach your child to do something for the enjoyment of doing it and not for your approval or attention. This means they are less likely to behave badly or feel so pressured to perform just to get you to take notice and give affection.
4. Genuine Moments
As described in the last point, children can behave badly to get your attention. Make sure you spend quality time with your children. Give 100% attention to them. I know this can be hard if you have many children, but you should always try to have individual time for each.
5. Getting Them Involved
Children like to be involved in what you are doing to make themselves feel useful, important and just having fun doing something new. While they will do the task slower and less efficiently than you, how else will they learn? It creates a great bonding process when you and your child are working at a task together.
There are many more aspects to positive parenting, though these 5 are the top ones I can see are important and has the largest positive effect on your child and yourself.
