How you communicate or the style of communication that you use will have a huge impact on the relationships you have with other people. This can include relationships with your partners, your boss or your doctor.
There has been a lot of research that has gone into the study of human communication. This research has overall identified that people use one of four distinct communication styles. Some people may use only one whereas, other people will change their communication style depending on the situation and how they interact with different people.
The following are the four styles of communication:
Non-assertive style
The non-assertive style can also be referred to as the submissive style. In this style of communication the submissive persons follows the commands and preferences of the other person while ignoring their own. This style is common with people who have a lack of confidence and belief in their own abilities. In situations where they find themselves interacting with a person who has a stronger personality they tend to be non assertive. Rather than put their own views across they follow the lead of others in order to please them.
Passive aggressive style
This style of communication is where people express their anger or disapproval internally rather than becoming openly angry. If the passive aggressive person does not like what has been said or told to do a task by someone they do not like they can respond by causing delays or completing a task unfinished. This style of communication can lead to a lot of frustration and animosity.
Aggressive communication style
In this style a person uses anger, verbal abuse and in some extreme cases resorts to violence to get their own way. These people have little to know feeling towards the sensitivity and feelings of others. They are only concerned about getting what they want. In these situations people will either walk away or respond with aggression themselves. This style of communication is destructive and needs to be controlled usually with treatment or anger management.
Assertive style
This style of communication is used by people who know what they want and have the confidence to get it. They do it while respecting the feelings of the people they engage and interact with. The assertive style uses direct and clear communication without the use of aggression but cooperation of other people. A confident assertive person has the ability to get people to achieve what they want without using controlling and manipulative tactics.
