Have you wondered what people were talking about when they said they were "going green?" Have they lost their minds? What are they talking about?
Well, there are a couple of things that individuals can do on their own to get in a greenish direction. "Going Green" simply means trying to use less of our natural resources like coal, oil and natural gas for our day to day existence. These natural resources, which we as Americans use more than any other country in the world, are used to drive our cars, heat and cool our homes, light our houses, run our businesses, cook our food, fly our planes, this list goes on and on, just add to it...
The problem is, that to convert these natural resources, coal, petroleum oil and natural gas into a form that we can use, causes a lot of problems for our environment. We burn coal to make electricity. A lot of it. Millions of tons per year. This coal has to be dug out of the ground. One of the ways to get this coal out of the ground is a process called strip mining. It wreaks havoc upon our landscapes. When we burn coal to make electricity, it doesn't burn clean. Millions of tons of particulates are spewed into the air in the electric making process when coal is burned. This is the same air that we breath...
When we burn petroleum products to power our cars, the emissions they produce are toxic to our world. The emissions create greenhouse gasses, which may (OR MAY NOT) cause global warming. This is air that we breath...
When we drill for oil and pump it out of the ground, sometimes we accidentally spill it into our seas and onto our coastlines, like we did in the Spring of 2010. This pollution kills sea life, sea birds and ultimately, destroys our beaches and coastlines.
Going green is trying to use less of these resources. Ways of "going green" can be as simple as driving less frequently, buying cars which use less gasoline, or buying cars that have some sort of hybrid or electric power system. Another way of going green is by using less electricity in our homes. Cutting back on air conditioning, adjusting the heat to use less energy, turning off lights when not used, buying mere energy efficient appliances.
Another way that we as individuals can use less natural resources to create electricity for our personal consumption is to make our own electricity. This can be done by installing solar power electric systems on our homes, or converting to wind powered electric generators. Even if this is just to supplement the energy that we purchase from the utility company, it still will be a reduction of the raw materials that are used to produce that electricity. Also, it will save the homeowner thousands of dollars over the life of the alternative system. Sunshine and Wind are still free. If everyone were to take some small steps to conserve energy, "go green", we can reduce the amount of pollution that we cause through our enormous use of natural resources.
