The most common type of mattress is one with relatively stiff springs surrounded by soft material which can be a mixture of things depending on the manufacturer. However other type of mattresses do exist which are uncommon but can provide for a very different sleeping experience.

Water based ones are very popular with people diagnosed with long term back problems. The water mattresses allow the shape of the sleeping surface to be somewhat determined by the person or people lying down. This prevents the back from being put into physically stressful positions. It is also very healthy for sports people or people that have very physically demanding jobs such as construction workers for the very same reasons. However most people do not sleep on water mats because they cost a lot more to purchase than the regular ones and are known for leaking of water when used for long periods of time. This is a problem that has been fixed by some manufacturers.

Soft mattresses also exist which are basically made out of densely stuffed soft material with no springs. This is only recommended if the one you want to buy is indeed very densely packed as otherwise the quality of your sleep can be severely reduced. This is due to there being insufficient support for your back, which can cause strains and other damage to your muscles in the back. When exposed to this type of uncomfortable sleep for long periods of time you can develop very bad back problems.
