"Karpus" is a Greek word that translates to "wrist", hence the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome name was born. This is an ailment of the wrists and hands area. This type of ailment entails swelling on both the hands and the wrists which causes a lot of damage to our nerves in that area. Diseases like arthritis, diabetes and hyperthyroidism can lead to this type of condition. Obesity and pregnancy can also lead to this type of ailment.

The ailment often begins with a mild version but then it actually develops gradually to a more pronounced type of numbness, tingling, coldness and pain. Sometimes, the pain can be so rigorous that it can shoot up all throughout the arms. There may be a point where one's strength and motor coordination may start to deteriorate due to severe and increasing numbness. The pain that one is experiencing can cause the sufferer a lack of sleep, leading to insomnia. He/she may also start to drop things unconsciously; this also can impede one's quality of life. In some point, the neck and shoulder area becomes uncomfortable too.

Early diagnosis of this ailment can prevent it from getting out control. A professional that specializes in the hand and wrists are must give the sufferer a thorough examination. The physician will be looking for deformity, swelling and discoloration of the hand and wrists. Tapping of one's wrist is included in this test, the physician will then note if the sufferer experienced tingling, this is a sign called as Tinel's. The bending of the wrist is called as the Phalen's maneuver. Blood tests will follow, just for them to be able to find the underlying causes of your Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

If the ailment is confirmed, a treatment plan will then follow after the determination of the syndrome's severity. The wrist needs to rest by wearing a supported splint. To help you ease the swelling, you are advised to put some ice on it. There are also some type of exercises that is needed to be done in order for you to stretch that may slow down or actually stop the ailments progression. Vitamin B6 and Corticosteroids may be prescribed to the sufferer.
