If you have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes, or even if you are in a high risk group for developing the disease, you should begin to think about the way you eat and try to make positive changes in your daily nutritional plan. Dietitians and nutritionists and other health care professionals consistently recommend a balanced diet for everyone, and they continue to tout the importance of eating healthily, whether you have diabetes or not.

You probably realize that refined, sugary, processed foods are not the best food choices to make when you are interested in lowering your blood sugar, but did you know there are some foods that have been shown to actually help lower blood sugar? It just makes sense that if you are having trouble with elevated glucose levels in your blood, that is, if you have diabetes, you might want to discover the best foods to lower blood sugar quickly.

One such food is cinnamon. Recent research has shown a direct correlation between eating cinnamon and and having lower glucose levels. So sprinkle a bit in your food; you might even be surprised to know that cinnamon is frequently used in cooking. Please, though, if it is a choice between no cinnamon and a gooey cinnamon roll, choose no cinnamon and avoid the treat.

Another of the best foods to lower blood sugar is brussel sprouts. You know those tiny little cabbages that you may not have liked so much as a kid? Turns out they are more than just regular old good for you; they actually may help lower your level. If you haven't tried them in a while, give them a shot again. I used to hate them, but now I love them.

Onions, too, are one of the best foods to help lower blood sugar levels quickly. So, go ahead. Breath worries be darned. Slice up that onion and put it on your lean-meat hamburger or go ahead and fry some up.
