Most people fail in business because they cannot distinguish between what's right and what's wrong. This kind of indecisiveness can occur in every aspect of their dealings, even their behaviors. And this is what leads them to indulge in what psychology calls as derailing behaviors-behaviors that make them lose focus and destabilize whatever work they have in hand.
Are you suffering from this kind of ignorance too? The following list of things will tell you whether you are on the right behavior or not.
1. Are you personally accountable? How do you behave when something goes unexpectedly wrong? Do you start hunting for the nearest shoulder you can lay the blame on? A lot of failed people have indulged in such practices. However, people who are successful today are accountable to themselves. If something goes wrong, they won't flinch from accepting their part in it, and they will take it as a learning experience which they will duly improve on.
2. It is good to fight for your convictions. If you are completely convinced about something-on the ground of your principles-then it is actually worthwhile to stand by it. However, if you are headstrong about it, even though everyone else seems to think your arguments are illogical, then you are going the wrong way.
3. When you believe something is correct, how strongly do you believe in it? It is not wrong to be unshakably convinced about something if you are absolutely certain of your justification, but it is wrong to be staunch about something you aren't sure about. Even with strong convictions, there needs to be flexibility to allow rational arguments and counterarguments to change perspective. This usually needs to happen in case of evolving issues; and almost every aspect of business is evolving all the time.
4. It is all right to have a strong personality that is influential-even impressive-to others. But it is not right to have an ego that looks at dominates others. People who dominate are hated behind their backs.
Here then are the important characteristics that you should emulate and the derailing behaviors that you should stay away from. Studying them carefully can help you become a more effective and inspiring leader.
