A legitimate debt settlement company helps the customer to break free from the burden of debt. A debt ridden person is over burdened with the affect of penal interest charges and late payment fees which are threatening to take away the peace of mind of people. If the debt has got beyond control and the customer feels he cannot pay it back the best solution is to settle it. A settlement company gives relief to the creditors to the tune of 60-70% on the over all debt amount. It all depends how well the company can negotiate with the creditors regarding the interest rate of payment and the overall debt bill which needs to be paid off.

Before looking for a debt company the customer must ascertain the fact how much he is in debt currently. For this he needs to put it down on a piece of paper the total debt or the total liability he has currently. He now needs to evaluate the total income he has putting together all sources on a piece pof paper. Now he should analyse if he can actually take care of the debt on his own or hr requires a professional support. Once the company has decided on the fact that he requires help the following should be kept in mind.

1. The company to be signed up needs to be a company with an established track record with past experience. The company should have a good experience in negotiation and settling debts.
2. The customer must do referral checks and confirm with other customers regarding past experience.
3. The customer needs to check regarding the fee structure. It has been found all good companies do not have a front load fee. The fee structure is pretty reasonable in all cases.
4. The company should be affiliated to IADPA to ensure legitimacy of the company.
5. All good companies have a refund policy if in case the customer does not want to proceed with the settlement process.

Settlement is a process of arbitration between the customer and the credit giving bodies. It is best to ascertain legitimacy of the company before going ahead and signing them up.

It would be wise to not go directly to a debt settlement company but rather first visit a debt relief network. The top debt relief networks only allow debt settlement companies into their accredited organizations that prove a track record of successfully negotiating debts and have also been certified.
