Why is there a need for debt consolidation? It is a question that seems easy enough to answer but we should consider why we need to ask the question at all!
In these modern times we all seem to know an awful lot more about debt than ever before as many of us have it in abundance. Trying to find someone who has no debt whatsoever is like trying to find a needle in a haystack and you would be forgiven for thinking that they don't exist.
Is it just me, or is there something wrong with this picture? Surely there should be more people free of debt? In our apparently wealthy and well-developed western world one would think that we would have the knowledge to help us live free from debt yet this is not the case.
With all this debt, more and more of us are beginning to buckle under the burden and one of the main causes is our love of the credit card or rather the love of being able to purchase things that we can't afford today with a piece of plastic that we can pay back tomorrow!
This is all well and good, but what if we are given too much credit? So much so that it exceeds that which we can afford to pay back and add to that an interest rate that increases whenever we make a late payment. Voila! Instant high interest debt problem!
There is help though, and this comes in the shape of debt consolidation.
Using debt consolidation, in its many forms, replaces as many high interest debts as required and replaces them with one lower interest repayment. The debt consolidation options that are available are debt consolidation loans, debt management services, debt settlement, credit card balance transfers and a few others, each suiting a different set of circumstances.
Each method of debt consolidation has its own unique benefits and disadvantages but all are aimed at relieving the burden of excessive debt by lowering bills in one way or another.
Although, debt consolidation may be looked upon as a knight in shining armor it is not, and nor should it be looked upon as, the cure to the affliction of debt. Controlling debt is something you will have to learn yourself, and you can do so by looking at your personal spending habits and understanding personal financial management.
Thankfully, many of the debt consolidation methods mentioned come with compulsory credit counseling that helps to educate you by highlighting the causes of your problem as well as informing you of the steps you will need to take to avoid being in a similar situation in the future.
