If only Microsoft could have foreseen how much trouble they would avoid by engineering the Xbox 360 better, I'm sure they would have paid more attention to the details. I'm talking about gamers having to deal with the Xbox 360 three red lights error. These three blinking red lights have tortured us for the past 4 years.
But this article is going to teach you how you can fix the red ring of death and avoid wasting more of your time with Microsoft's shoddy repair service.
Preface
Let me start by saying, warranties are nice when they actually take care of the problem. Microsoft's warranty, however, is annoying, time consuming, and downright frustrating.
But if you plan on fixing your Xbox 360 yourself, you'll be opening up the case. Just a word of warning...this voids any warranty on the Xbox 360.
Things to Try Before You Open Up the Console
The Xbox 360 three red lights error can be attributed to a handful of different things. Try these little troubleshooting tips before you open your console up (you'd be surprised how many times something this small is causing such a large problem).
• Make sure your console is well ventilated. Heat is the leading cause behind the three red lights error.
• Double check to make sure your hard drive, AV cables, and power cord are all securely attached to your console and that they are not damaged in any way.
How to Fix the Three Red Lights Error
If you tried the above troubleshooting tips but you're still getting the Xbox 360 red lights, then the heat has already caused some damage on the inside of your console. That means you'll need to follow these repair procedures to fix it:
1 - Open up the console.
2 - Remove the DVD drive.
3 - Remove the Motherboard and GPU assembly.
4 - Remove the clamps that hold the GPU on.
5 - Use a set of small washers (or some other device) to separate direct contact between the clamps and the boards.
6 - Reassemble the console and start it up. You'll need to let it warm up for about 30 minutes before the red lights will go away. Just reboot it after half an hour and start playing again.
