Daringly Innovative USANA

USANA is obviously a very successful and innovative company.

How were they able to bridge the gap between a founder's vision and expert status with a product AND build and grow a company in a fiercely competitive marketplace?

Which would you prefer for a company - a visionary adept at his product or a skilled marketer or a gifted businessperson?

Certainly both qualities are important for a start-up company. Without a USP of either product or service, a business can't thrive in competition. Interestingly, individuals with technical skills on a product may or may not be adept at business which is required if companies need to grow from strength to strength.

Dr. Myron Wentz is an internationally recognized microbiologist, immunologist, and pioneer in the development of human cell culture technology and infectious disease diagnoses. Dr Wentz is a bachelor degree holder in biology with a master's in microbiology and a Ph.D in microbiology and immunology from Central College in Naperville, Illinois, University of North Dakota and University of Utah respectively.

After three years of clinical experience he saw an opportunity to make a deeper contribution to medical science by developing much-needed tests for viral diseases. Apparently, a path was being laid out for his schooling.

However, unlike many brilliant scientists, Dr. Wentz has a strong entrepreneurial spirit as well. He launched Gull Laboratories in 1974 and operated it single-handedly. By June of 1977, several of his viral diagnostic assays were FDA-approved and ready for marketing to hospitals and clinical laboratories.The Epstein-Barr virus infection diagnosis test was the first commercially available test developed by him. Amazing! USANA Health Sciences was founded by Dr. Wentz in 1992 as a state-of-the-art manufacturer of nutritional and vitamin supplements with profits made by selling his stake in Gull Laboratories.

Dr. Wentz is focused on being a scientist rather than a business man despite his obvious success in businesses. Nonetheless, Dr. Wentz' business acumen has been recognized through a Presidential appointment as an advisor to the Small Business Administration and as a 2003 recipient of the Utah Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.

Encouraging the consistent growth of USANA along side recruitment of adept business associates and partners was # 2 job.

Job #1 saw him creating and implementing a program based on network marketing which generated almost crazy profits.
