DIY Scaffolding Or a Professional Scaffolding Company?

Expert Author Sasha Zabelin

When building your own house there will come a time when you need to work on the higher parts of the construction. Many jobs can be carried out using a ladder, and with the quality and length of available ladders this is a viable option. However, the fact remains that ladders are dangerous, there is no escaping the statistics. "Between 2004 and 2010, accidental falls in the US accounted for almost 25 percent of all reported fractures."

With this scary statistic in mind, whether you are painting the house, repairing the roof, replacing rotten boards or cleaning guttering, it is highly advisable to considering the hiring of a professional scaffolding company.

DIY Scaffolding
Many people consider this an avoidable expense and attempt to erect scaffolding themselves, but unless you have industry experience scaffolding is not easy to construct, safely. One loose walk board could cost you your life, one missing steel pin and you could find yourself seriously injured in hospital. Another point to consider is accident insurance coverage and limitations. Will your insurance company cover you for an accident if you erected the scaffolding yourself? Make sure you check before making a fatal mistake.

Scaffolding isn't easy to erect, thus the reason there are plenty of professional scaffolding companies around serving building sites, office window cleaners, and concert/theatre events. Scaffold jacks are made of steel tubing which makes them very heavy and difficult to manage. The tubes become even more difficult to handle when adjusted telescopically. The walk boards are also extremely heavy and usually made form 2x12 lumber wood designed to support the heavy weight of multiple workers and building materials. You would certainly need help from at least three people to erect scaffolding on a three bedroom property for example.

Safety First
Scaffolding is a great safety measure and provides a safe alternative to using a ladder, but you could compromise this safety if you choose to erect the scaffolding yourself. Hire a scaffolding company to do the job for you and rest assured that you won't suddenly slip through the boards or fall because of a loose tube.

If you do decide to hire a scaffolding company then offset the cost by getting more than one job done during the hire period. For example, if your roof needs attention but the house also needs painting then take the opportunity to utilize the scaffolding. Clean the guttering while you are up there and also give those top windows a good clean.

A number of articles on the internet suggest DIY scaffolding is of relative ease and readily offer instructions on construction. But will these same people pay your medical bills if you have an accident? I very much doubt it. Be safe, lay out the extra money, get as much work done on your property during the hire period and put your safety first.
