Driving an electric vehicle is not the same as driving a conventional automobile. You cannot expect the EV to have the same performance or drive mileage!

For a normal car, if you were to run out of fuel, a gasoline station would be around the corner for you to top up. If you were to run out of electric power on an EV, finding a power outlet to recharge will be challenging. If you were to find a shop that is will to allow to plug-in, how much would you have to compensate the owner for the power you have consumed? For the time being, the demand for pure electric car is still not being enough for large corporation to setup recharging stations. EV owners would have to charge their car at home and plan their journey carefully.

A homemade electric car would have a driving mileage of approximately 100 miles before the battery run out of power. The actual mileage will depend of the power rating of the motor, car gross weight, battery charged state and also driving condition. To improve the mileage is a matter of reducing weight or adding more battery pack.

Before you carry out a Do It Yourself (DIY) electric car conversion project, know your daily pattern. Do you have to drive long distances to work? Would you be constantly stuck in a traffic jam? If so, an EV may not be suitable for you. If your daily driving is only to the shops around town or fetching your kids from school, an electric car will meet your requirement.
