DHA and Brain Development Has a Close Connection

Expert Author Jennifer P. April

If you've been reading about nutrition and brain health, then you've probably heard about DHA and brain development.

DHA is an omega 3 fatty acid essential to your brain health at every stage of your life but especially for your baby.

Studies show that prenatal infants who don't get enough of these nutrients will develop motor skills later than children who do. Up to 2 months later.

It can also help them focus and get better grades later in school.

Plus, they'll take the needed nutrients from their mothers which deprives you of essential brain health.

Research shows DHA affects your brain by building it and keeping it healthy.

But it also improves your memory and protects you from Alzheimer's disease. It's able to protect you like this because it keeps your neural pathways clear so messages can be sent quickly from one part of your body to another through your brain.

Other studies prove that DHA can improve your concentration and your focus. This is even true for young children. A study in England took approximately a dozen children diagnosed with ADHD and fed them DHA fish oil supplements. After just 3 months, there was a tremendous increase in the children's math and language abilities. One young boy was able to start reading at grade level after having been 2 grade levels before.

It really shouldn't be so surprising.

Another study in Sweden found that adolescents who got higher levels of DHA had 15% better grades than students who didn't get enough.

Getting enough DHA is really just getting the proper nutrition.

Nutrition experts say 100 years ago we got these nutrients through our food but since diets have changed so much, it's gotten much more difficult to get them through food alone.

Fish is one food that has high amounts of this fatty acid. That's why the fish oil supplements were used in the English study and fish shows up again in the Swedish one.

Fish has about 30% of these nutrients. Supplements can have 60% or more.

Many doctors recommend women take DHA fish oil supplements for the brain development of their babies. They recommend continuing to take it as they nurse so their children get the nutrients they need.

Research shows these children will develop motor skills and other cognitive abilities with more ease than the children who don't get enough.
