If you were to imagine your creativity as part of your wardrobe, what kind of outfit would it be? The clothing that you wear day in and day out that's comfortable, practical, and that you feel ready to take on life's daily tasks in?
Or, like most of us, do you see your creativity as something more like that special outfit that only comes out for very special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas?
This sounds on the surface like you're treating your creativity with respect, and revering it's place and purpose in your life. Which is a good thing, isn't it?
Well, yes, giving it respect is great. But only bringing it out a handful of times a year for those very special events is not so great!
What then happens when you do? You feel a little uncomfortable, like you're tottering in heels when the most of the time you're used to wearing comfortable flat shoes or training shoes. You feel restricted in your movement as if you're wearing underwear that's more like a wonder of modern architecture than comfortably supportive. And you're constantly in fear of getting a splash of sauce or a drop of wine on your best outfit so that makes you even more cautious.
Do these sound the ideal conditions you need to be free and to have the best possible time? Nope, not for a party, and not for creating!
So what's the alternative? Instead of being a fancy outfit, maybe you could see your creativity more like everyday wear that you throw on and feel ready to do anything in, from going running to decorating to working to playing with your children?
That would be a step in the right direction. The problem is you're still seeing your creativity as something detached from you, something you need to go and put on everyday.
Your creativity isn't clothing at all. It's always there, waiting to jump into action at a moment's notice. It's not an item of clothing. It's as close to you, as flexible, and as essential as your SKIN.
You can't remove your creativity at the end of the day and hang it up in your wardrobe. But that's what many of us do, metaphorically speaking. Then it just hangs and gathers dust for days, weeks or months on end.
Some of the most powerful ways you can be more creative begin with a simple shift in perspective that gives you new insight into just how important creativity is for you. This is one of them.
Start to realise that YOUR creativity is as much a part of you as your skin, and you can put it to use every moment of every day, not just on those rare special occasions.
