All creative writers find that the huge problem with going the Print on demand also known as the POD route is that it costs more to produce single copies of your book than it does to have them print a thousand copies of your book. You can buy your book, from CreateSpace for $5.70.
Now, if you had your book printed up directly through a POD printer and you ordered a 3 thousand of them you will be able to cut the cost nearly in half. But you will have to pay an upfront fee to buy books and then you would have to figure out a way to sell them.
If Amazon is selling it for $17.99 CreateSpace royalties are about 35% of the list price and if you become an Amazon Affiliate you can earn 7% more. These are pretty decent royalty rates in the self-publishing world. Some of the other self-publishers may have a little more flexibility with price setting then on Amazon, but they do not have the power and reach that Amazon does so you are likely to sell more copies.
Every Author I have heard from has generally had a good experience with CreateSpace and is satisfied with their customer service. Since self-publishing is a dynamic and rapidly evolving industry with lots of competitors you can expect things to change on a dime. With Amazon offering 35% royalties on the e-books they sell in 2009, and having gone up to 70% in 2010. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next 1 - 5 years.
