Creating an Ethical and Interesting Marketing Campaign

Your clients use a variety of methods to find their new lawyer, which is why legal marketing is so important to building your practice. If you're not expanding your presence in a variety of efforts, your entire lawyer advertising campaign is going to be in vain.

Creating an interesting marketing campaign isn't easy, especially when having to deal with the ethical side of lawyer marketing. Bar rules, advertising etiquette, and just general standards all come into play when developing your legal marketing components.

Comprehensive Legal Marketing

A good blend of interesting lawyer advertising that's ethical in its execution and message is the ideal recipe for good legal marketing. The message you send in one advertising channel should be consistent across all of your marketing channels. Don't get caught advertising yourself exclusively as a motorcycle accident attorney in one venue and then have an ad in another venue stating you only handle wrongful death claims.

Keep Your Legal Marketing Interesting

No one wants to read page after page of boring, cookie-cutter lawyer advertising that all says the same thing. Too many times I've seen a page of lawyer ads, online and in the Yellow Pages, where the only difference is the name and phone number.

Lawyer advertising doesn't have to stick to strictly cut and dried ads. If you're comfortable with it, show the human side of your practice. Be a bit entertaining, but still professional. Clients like to see a lawyer who has a personal life outside the practice; one who is in touch with the community rather than just closing case after case. You should also take this opportunity to offer potential clients something unique and not just a free consultation like every other lawyer out there.

Keep Your Legal Marketing Ethical

Often in the development of our next lawyer advertising piece we come up with a clever idea to step outside the marketing box. These can be really successful, especially when you get to try something no one else has. Unfortunately, many of these ideas get stifled by ill-conceived and strict bar rules that govern legal marketing.

You should always review your local bar rules for lawyer advertising standards before proceeding with a new legal marketing strategy. Don't get discouraged if you see pages of restrictions - there's always a solution to work with them. Sometimes it's just a matter of clever wording, while other times you can actually contact the bar for clarification and learn how to work with a rule.

Avoid making any sort of promise or guarantee. Of course, always remember that the standards of ethics apply no matter what your local bar says.

At Great Legal Marketing, we focus on saying NO to ineffective traditional lawyer marketing. We seek out new strategies to market to our ideal clients in ways they'll actually respond to. So how do you get started? Get a FREE report and CD from legal marketing guru, Ben Glass.
